COLOUR PSYCHOLOGY FOR YOUR OFFICE!

What colour inspires creativity?
What colour encourages productivity?
What is the meaning of colours?

I'm not gonna tell you the exact colour for your office, but I will definitely tell you about 3 most motivating colours.(and yes, they're bright, but they don't have to be!)

"Colour psychology is the study of hues as a determinant of human behavior. Colour influences perceptions that are not obvious, such as the taste of food."

The first colour is yellow, It's a colour of happiness, high energy, enthusiasm and fun. If you're a designer, and you want creativity, blue isn't going to be the colour for you. Yellow stimulates your ego and spirits, also it makes you more optimistic. It takes guts to be creative and come up with something new and original, that's why yellow works in that environment!

Too much yellow in an interior can cause tiredness and frustration, because it is the brightest colour in the visible spectrum and most noticeable by the human eye. This is why it's so important not to go overboard, don't go painting your whole room yellow! It works best in modern and monochrome interiors, it adds that needed pop of colour to the space.

The next motivational colour, (and personally my favourite) is green! There is green motivation, green motivation is very strong, perhaps the strongest of all. As a colour it refreshes us, calms us down and makes us comfortable. We like seeing green, but we hardly ever notice it because it is part of life itself. It symbolizes growth, harmony, balance, freshness and fertility. We also feel safer when sitting in a room surrounded by green.
The easiest way of adding green to a room, is by adding some plants!

If it was my office, I would definitely choose green. I feel like I'm the most motivated and productive when I'm surrounded by green, it's not too harsh on my eyes, also it makes the space feel peaceful.

The last productive colour is Red! Red motivation is not so strong as dynamic, it glows with it's own intensity. We all notice red, we can't help it!
If you want to be more productive doing something physical, red would make you more productive than either green or yellow, because it stimulates you physically. If you’re hiring a bunch of guys to build you a house, blue isn’t going to be a lot of help to you , you want the red for physical strength and stimulus.

All of those bright colours are usually accents for the interior, you wouldn't see many yellow or red walls, maybe some green ones as it's the most neutral out of these 3!

Just before I finish this post, have a look at this office. Clive Wilkinson has converted the upper floors of a downtown Vancouver store into an open plan office for Microsoft.

Any ideas why Microsoft uses these colours?

  6. I work from home and my office has a yellow accent wall that I added decor to. It helps me stay positive. I also have plants in my office and motivational stuff on the walls to keep me going throughout my day as I am alone most days, taking calls from clients.

  9. I love all white rooms. They give you such a feeling of space and peace. With two young children, it will probably be a good few years until I can make this a reality.
